Expect a collaborative working relationship to address whatever is most distressing or important to you. There is usually an initial session and follow up 50 minute sessions. Together, you and the therapist will identify goals and general time frames. Goals are usually mutually decided upon within the first 2 sessions. These are your goals, not ours. We will check progress at intervals mutually agreed upon.
The initial session usually is an hour and 15 minutes to review the intake paperwork and allow sufficient time for you to share whatever you like. If possible, it’s preferable to complete the initial paperwork in advance to maximize the initial meeting time.
How Can I Make the most of therapy?
It’s important to understand that therapy works best if both you and the therapist are working. The therapist supports you, and suggests helpful ways to work on problems. But it is important that you also work toward resolving the issues. A therapist alone can not solve the issues. Other key factors to effective therapy are a trusting, supportive relationship between you and the therapist, and your commitment to the process.
You can expect to be treated with respect, compassion, and non-judgment.
If you have any questions about the therapeutic process or any other questions, please call me. I would be happy to consult with you.
